Hello Friends,

My name is Kathryn Johnson, feel free to call me Kat. I am honored to join the Armatage community this fall as a Pre-K Teacher!

Education & Experience

I have worked as a substitute teacher for nearly the past two years, serving schools primarily within the Saint Paul Public School District. During this time I developed an appreciation for the Montessori-style learning environment. Last fall I completed my student teaching at JJ Hill Montessori Magnet in Saint Paul, where I remained as a long-term substitute teacher in a Children’s House (Pre-K and Kindergarten) classroom for the remainder of the spring.

I hold a Bachelor of Arts in Elementary Education from Concordia University, Saint Paul, and a K-6 teaching license. I am actively completing my Early Childhood Endorsement, while also pursuing my Master of Science in Early Childhood Education through the Montessori Teacher Graduate Program at the University of Wisconsin, River Falls.

Children’s House Philosophy

In this classroom environment children will be granted the freedom to choose work with Montessori materials in the areas of Math, Language, Science, Geography, Practical Life, Sensorial, Movement, and Art. The Pre-K experience is often the first many children and families have within a public school. I take great responsibility in ensuring my classroom environment is safe, loving, and equitable for all students. It is my goal to instill a love of learning, building on each individual child’s natural desire to learn.

My greatest joy as a Montessori teacher in an early childhood setting is providing children with opportunities to gain independence. Through their play and work, children have the ability to pursue their own interests and explore foundational concepts through concrete, hands-on learning materials. As stated by Maria Montessori, ”The hand is the instrument of the mind." It is my hope that through individualized exploration, children will build confidence in their ability to meet new challenges.

About Me

I live in Saint Paul with my husband, Brady. I enjoy running by the river, cooking, and spending time at my cabin on Lake Vermilion.

I look forward to meeting you all as soon and safely as possible.

All my best,

—Kat Johnson
