Greetings Armatage Montessori School!
Welcome, Soo Dhawow, Bienvenidos y Txais Tos!
I am deeply honored and grateful to introduce myself as the new Assistant Principal at Armatage
Montessori School. This community is reputably known for the wonderful support all of the students receive
from their teachers, families, and school community. I am very excited to be able to positively contribute to the
Armatage community and hope to create long lasting relationships as we move forward into a school year full
of uncertainty due to the Comprehensive District Design, our ongoing fight for racial justice and of course,
My story begins with my parents who were immigrants to the United States from the Philippines. My
mother taught in the Philippines before becoming an MPS teacher, working for 25 years on the Northside. It
was she who taught me the importance of education for everyone; education as a means to level the playing
field. I went into nonprofit work and after briefly working in curriculum development for Minnesota Early
Learning Design, I decided to move into a position that would give me the opportunity to connect directly with
young people. A family friend told me to work in her classroom at South High School as an SEA. It was that
opportunity that gave me my first experience with students with special needs. I never went back. I decided to
get my special education license and become a teacher. For 10 years, I had the pleasure of providing direct
instruction for students with special needs working at Groves Academy and Robbinsdale Area Schools.
Working with many amazing teachers throughout those years gave me the push to become an
administrator, to help support and retain incredible staff. In the last five years, I’ve worked at Bethune
Community School in MPS first as an assistant principal and most recently as the principal for the last two
years. My main focus was to make sure that all students have the opportunity to become highly successful
through an equitable education and differentiated instruction. I truly believe that my love for social justice and
special education are my greatest strengths as a leader.
Although leaving Bethune was difficult, I look at my move to Armatage much like a quote by the author,
H. Jackson Brown, “Opportunity dances with those already on the dance floor.” As someone newer in my
administrative career, this is a once in a lifetime opportunity to learn from a dynamite principal like Joan, and
work with the best staff in MPS. Armatage, I’m ready to dance!
This summer will be spent at my home in Robbinsdale primarily with my family which consists of my
wife Nina (who also works with children and youth), my two girls Zinnia (11 years old) and Adella (9 years old),
and my two dogs (Bubble, Toto). When not immersed in family time, you can find me running, working outside,
and missing watching football. I am excited to meet this wonderful community full of passionate and caring
people. Please feel free to contact me via email at jasper.jonson@mpls.k12.mn.us with anything I can do to
support you this upcoming year. Have a wonderful summer, and hopefully I can see you soon!
Eager and Excited,
Jasper Jonson
