Happy March!

Congratulations to the 3rd grade students in room 126 (Stacy Katzovitz class) and room 127 (Kristen Hanson’s class) who sang “The Rainbow Connection” for our February Student of the Month program (Friday February 21st). They did an excellent job!  This Student of the Month song was a special request by Principal Franks… it’s her favorite!

Grades Pre-K and K  Students have been working on all of their Spring Music Program performance songs and are doing an excellent job. They have been learning songs with and without song sheets. They seem to rise to every challenge and enjoy mastering their tasks!

All of the classes have learned about the ‘hows’ and ‘whys’ of “Performance Line Ups”, and have been assigned a place in line. By mid-March all of the classes will have their order and begin learning how to enter, stand, and exit the risers on the stage in the Little Theater – upon availability.

Grades 1 and 2  Students are continuing to work on their performance songs, and some have already memorized quite a few of them. Our favorite song appears to be “Fifty Nifty United States” which is great because one of our Learning Targets is: I can remember all 50 (united) states in alphabetical order. Our most challenging song as a whole (in my opinion) is “Smokey The Bear” because it has 4 verses that are completely different from each other and have many mouthfuls of words to fit into music that is moving along rather quickly. This year we are determined to ‘perfect’ this song and sing it in the Spring Music Program.

As with the kindergarten and pre-kindergarten classes, all of the 1st and 2n grade classes are in the process of learning about the ‘hows’ and ‘whys’ of “Performance Line Ups”, and are being assigned their new place in line. In mid-March we will begin learning how to enter, stand, and exit the risers on the stage in the Little Theater – upon availability.

Our March and April Student of the Month programs will feature 1st and 2nd graders. Our March song will be “Lift Every Voice and Sing”, and our April song will be “Big Beautiful Planet” in honor of Earth Day (which is in April). Good luck everyone! (FYI – the March Student of the Month Program is Friday March 20th and the April Student of the Month Program is Friday April 17th. Both take place at 8:30 a.m. in the Little Theater.

Grade 3  Third graders are continuing to work on the music class expectations, routines, and jobs.  Two of our learning targets are: “I CAN define a round” and “I CAN sing in a 4 part round”. Our song “Kookaburra” provides the opportunity to learn about and practice singing in a round.  Almost all of the classes have worked on Parts 1 and 2 and will soon begin working on Parts 3 and 4. By the end of the month we will divide the class into 2 parts and begin mastering singing in a 2-part round… then we will move into a 3-part round, and finally 4. Our goal is to get this song performance ready and present it in our Spring Music Program. Wish us luck!!!

Grades 4 and 5   Our songs are coming along quite well. Students are starting to memorize them and soon all interested students will begin signing up for solo auditions. All classes have been learning the bongo accompaniment to one of our songs, and students will have the opportunity to sign up to audition for the bongo specialty part. Auditions will take place in April when we return from spring break. We have been working on our triple canon and classes are progressing nicely. At this point we have just added voices (speaking and sounds) to a single canon. Soon we will move into a double canon, and finally a triple canon. This canon is the traditional 4th and 5th grade finale in our Spring Music Program.

Next week we will return to (and concentrate on) our 5th grade graduation song “It’s Time To Go”. I can’t believe it’s already this time of year. I truly do not know where the time has gone. ☹

At the end of March 3-5th grade students will have the opportunity to sign up for specialized jobs and feature parts for our Spring Music Program (in addition to solo and bongo auditions).  Pre-Kindergarden – 2nd grade students will have the opportunity to sign up to announce a song (or be an alternate announcer) in our program. More information to follow.
