Staci Owens

Welcome to Room 117!

What led you to become a public school teacher?
After working in county government for a number of years, I realized I needed a career change. After some soul searching, I realized I really wanted to be a teacher. So I went back to school to get my teaching licensure, and haven’t looked back since!

What is your training/where did you go to school?
I have a bachelor’s degree in music with a minor in theater from Augsburg University, I received training for a Montessori certification from the College of St. Catherine, and my Master’s degree in education with a focus on equity in the classroom from Augsburg University.

What is your favorite thing about classroom teaching?
The relationships I build with my students and their families. The conversations we have in the classroom, and the way students make me laugh every day.

What is your favorite thing about the Armatage community?
It’s a very close knit group – like extended family. Families are supportive of the teachers and staff.

Where are you from?untitled.jpg
I’ve lived in Minnesota my whole life. I grew up in and around the Anoka area, and currently live in North Minneapolis with my family.

What is your family like?
My husband, Brian, and I have 2 kids – Skylar is entering their senior year at Colorado College, and Braeden is entering his senior year at Southwest High School. We love to do game night together in which we play board games, poker, or Dungeons and Dragons. We live in a small house in north Minneapolis with our 2 dogs and 3 cats. Brian and I love to take trips to our lovely state parks on the weekends and go on hikes.

What subject(s) did you like when you were school age?
I loved reading and writing when I was young, as I grew older I also loved history.

What is your favorite children's book?
When I was growing up, my two favorite books were Alexander and his Terrible Horrible No Good Very Bad Day and Where the Wild Things Are. Now I also absolutely love Sulwe and The Day You Begin for picture books, and the novels Becoming Naomi Léon and Apple in the Middle.

What interests do you have outside of teaching?
I love hiking and musical theater, I train and teach Krav Maga (an Israeli form of hand to hand combat)

If you could give your 5th grade self advice about school, what would it be?
Have fun, take risks, and explore as much as you can!

What silver linings did you find during the pandemic?
I was able to spend so much time with my husband and kids
