Welcome to Room 113!
Hi! My name is Jean Avecilla. I started teaching in the Minneapolis district in 1993. I have spent the majority of my teaching career teaching 1st and 2nd grade. I have been at Armatage since 2003. I have loved seeing the Armatage community work together to create a school we can all love. A goal I have each year is to nurture a kind, caring community in Room 113! We become a supportive family for one another, and I enjoy seeing the bonds made between friends.
I love watching children get excited about learning! I especially love teaching geography and biology. We “travel” around the world in our morning meetings and learn how to greet one another in different languages. I also enjoy teaching about life cycles of different animals – monarchs, mealworms, frogs, fish, chicks, and other animals will often find their way in our classroom!
A little more about myself
I grew up in central Wisconsin, so I love the Packers, the Badgers, and all things cheesy. I have been living in Minneapolis since 1991. I have 2 daughters – Gabby (college student in Chicago) and Eloise (Southwest High School student) and Arthur (our squirrel-chasing rescue dog that is all muscle, bucket head, and drool).
I graduated from the University of Wisconsin - Madison with a BA in Italian. I received my Elementary Education certification through the University of Minnesota - Twin Cities, my Montessori certification through the College of St. Catherine's in Minneapolis, and my Masters in Curriculum and Instruction from Concordia University in Portland.
When I am not teaching, I love finding fun recipes! I love cooking and baking. I enjoy cooking because of my mom. I love eating her Filipino food! I also enjoy walking our dog and spending time with my daughters as much as possible. We love watching football and movies and finding fun places to discover together!
