Elizabeth (Neuman) Koch has been teaching for fourteen years. She joined the Armatage staff in the fall of 2012 as the art specialist.
When asked about her teaching philosophy, Elizabeth said she believes that "a child's first art experiences should be joyful. Children should view and be inspired by adult artists, but never asked to copy. They should feel safe to take creative risks, to explore their thoughts and feelings about their lives and the world around them. Art class should be hands-on, a place to practice problem solving and critical thinking."
She calls teaching art to children her "dream job." Says Koch, "I love witnessing the wonder and hard work that happens when children use visual materials to communicate about themselves and the world around them. I am inspired by the commitment that children make to the work of creating and I feel lucky to take on the challenge of guiding them through their early art experiences."
Ms. Koch graduated from Ohio University with a bachelor's degree in fine art, and is currently pursuing a master's degree in art education at the University of Minnesota. She lives with her partner in south Minneapolis. In her free time, she enjoys traveling, movies, gardening, painting, and spending time with friends and family.
